But all winters eventually end, and spring takes over. Lia was going through a rough time in her life and like winter, this time felt daunting and seemingly never ending, making Lia just want to give up and give in to her disorder. Winter also symbolizes Lia's journey to recovery. They are still breathing but they aren't really living their lives, they're Wintergirls. Cassie and Lia still had a heartbeat, a pulse, but they were dead to the world around them and they were frozen in this state of mind that they should keep everyone out and let themselves slowly die on the inside, which kind of explains that quote. "You're not dead, but you're not alive either. Winter is a symbol for the perpetual state of frozenness Lia and Cassie are in as Wintergirls. One of the main themes of this novel is winter and what it symbolizes.
