I believe it would have been very difficult to be a woman at this time, let alone a woman who wanted to be more than just a wife and a mother. ![]() I had been unaware that Florence had its own version of the Spanish Inquisition, but then I suppose most places suffered from such excesses during this age. It was interesting to see how the death of Lorenzo de Medici affected the entire future of the city-state he ruled and how easily it slipped from enlightened to fanatic. I enjoyed the details about the city, the history and the culture of 1490s Florence. Coming from an upper-class family and schooled beyond the normal level for girls of her time, Alessandra has a love of art and an understanding of classics that drive her to live an unusual life, and give her a platform from which to bear witness to both the wonders of, and dissolution of, the great city of Florence. With Savonarola, the Bonfires of the Vanities, and the religious fervor that swept Florence in the 1490s as its historical reference, Dunant has chosen to tell the story of Alessandra Cecchi, a strong-willed girl who influences a young painter. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All in all, the letters and "Screwtape Proposes a Toast," the last chapter of the book, are a witty and cautionary commentary on the state of the modern human soul.Īt first, Uncle Screwtape is paternal with his nephew Wormwood and quite indulgent. He encourages his nephew's successes, suggests various and devious ways to enter the man's thoughts and influence him, and berates Wormwood for his failures as the man begins attending church, goes through various ups and downs of faith, falls in love with a Christian girl, and is called to service in the War. Lewis is an amusing and insightful correspondence between a senior devil, Screwtape, and his obstreperous and incompetent nephew, Wormwood, a "young fiend." All of the letters are from Screwtape to Wormwood, and the subject of the correspondence is a human being, newly converted to Christianity, whom Screwtape refers to as "the patient." Throughout the correspondence, Screwtape tries to help Wormwood tempt the patient away from Heaven and into Hell. ![]() Written in the form of letters, The Screwtape Letters by C. ![]() ![]() ![]() For those that find Sinn’s 45mm T1 a bit too much, the T50 clocks in at a very wearable 41mm diameter, with a case height of just 12.3mm. Such adaptations can be a risky enterprise. Lately – between serious kids’ books, you might say – Wynne-Jones has turned his hand to retelling the classics: The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1996 and Dracula for this fall’s book season. ![]() His more recent young-adult works, Some of the Kinder Planets and The Maestro, have garnered Governor General’s awards and bestsellerdom. As the book was originally published in 1956, this could be a product of the time, but nevertheless should be noted. The second is that this book does use the g-slur when referencing the Romani people as well as uses harmful stereotypes when describing them. The cat does get her revenge and a happy ending in the finale, though. In this original rendition, she owns a white persian who has had multiple litters with "alley cats" and since the kittens weren't valuable pure-breds, they were taken away from their poor mother and drowned. Cruella was already a cold-hearted animal murderer long before the dalmatians were involved. The first is that there is mention of drowning kittens. I would have given this story a perfect score if not for two points, which parents should consider before letting their youngest children listen to it. The characters all came to life wonderfully, including the handful of puppies that were actually named (It would be impossible to name them all in one book, of course). His voice lent just the sort of charm that this story deserved. Though Perdita is also in the story and becomes part of the family quickly - 15 puppies is a lot for one mother, after all!). Pongo's wife in the book is named Misses.
